США принадлежат острова Сент-Крой [St. Croix], Сент-Томас [St. Thomas Island], Сент-Джон [St. John Island], а также около 50 мелких островов (остальные 4 крупных и 32 мелких острова принадлежат Великобритании). Площадь американских владений 344 кв. км. 122,2 тыс. жителей (2001). Административный центр г. Шарлотта-Амали [Charlotte Amalie] на о. Сент-Томас. Тропический жаркий и влажный климат с двумя засушливыми сезонами. Выращивание фруктов, овощей, кокосовых орехов, производство рома. Крупнейший в мире нефтеперерабатывающий завод на о. Сент-Крой. Международный морской порт в заливе Сент-Томас [St. Thomas Bay]. Два международных аэропорта. Основная отрасль экономики - туризм (2 млн. туристов в 1991). Большинство населения - потомки рабов, выходцы из Пуэрто-Рико, континентальных США, Венесуэлы и с Малых Антильских островов. Официальный язык - английский, распространены также испанский и креольский. Уровень образования и здравоохранения один из самых высоких в странах Карибского бассейна. Колледж Виргинских островов [College of the Virgin Islands]. Остров Сент-Крой открыт в 1493 Христофором Колумбом. В 1666 датчане основали поселение на о. Сент-Томас, в 1684 оккупировали Сент-Джон, а в 1733 купили Сент-Крой у Франции. Их владения были известны под названием Датская Вест-Индия. В 1848 здесь было отменено рабство. В 1917 США, понимая стратегическое значение этих островов на пути к Панамскому каналу [Panama Canal], приобрели эти острова за 25 млн. долларов. С 1927 островитяне являются гражданами США. В 1970 здесь прошли первые выборы губернатора, который до этого назначался президентом США. Роль конституции выполняет Исправленный основной закон 1954 года [Revised Organic Act of 1954]. С 1973 острова имеют представителя с правом совещательного голоса в Палате представителей [House of Representatives]. Среди достопримечательностей: Национальный парк "Виргинские острова" [Virgin Islands National Park], поселение Кристианстед [Christiansted National Historic Site] и Национальный памятник "Риф острова Бак" [Buck Island Reef National Monument]
